The iconic Kumamoto castle that we see today was completed in 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa, the first daimyo (feudal lord) of the castle, with great effort and the latest technology.
Since then, Kumamoto Castle has set the stage for the stories of a variety of significant heros spanning 400 years of Japan's history. The Hosokawa clan, swordmaster Miyamoto Musashi, and Imperial Army commander Tani Tateki are just some of the heroes who have carved their names on the tablet of the castle's dramatic history.

History of Kumamoto Castle

In 1607, Kumamoto Castle was constructed in the center of Chausuyama Plateau under Kato Kiyomasa.
In 1632, Hosokawa Tadatoshi entered the castle, becoming the feudal lord of Kumamoto.
After the feudal system was abolished, the Chinzei Garrison was stationed at the castle. In 1877, Kumamoto Castle became the battleground for the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji Government. Just before that war broke out, the castle towers and the entire Honmaru-Goten palace burned to the ground.
Following the end of World War 2, momentum increased among the citizens of Kumamoto to rebuild the castle towers.
In 1960, the exteriors of the large and small castle towers were reconstructed of steel-reinforced concrete.
